I have been asked many questions about remote learning and how to set up a child’s at home ‘learning space’. The best advice I can give is to set it up in a way that most suits your child’s learning style.
There are no rules. This is the opportunity for your child to be comfortable when they are ‘in class’. The most creative and child centered teachers I know have always accommodated (remember we accommodate the learner) by providing flexible seating/standing and sometimes laying down opportunities in their classrooms.
Does your child like small, cozy environments? Make a tent in the room? Do they like to be surrounded by their ‘stuff’? That’s good too. Ask your child where they feel they will be at their best to participate and learn during remote instruction. There are no rules. This is the opportunity to make remote learning accessible for your child in the setting that best reflects their needs.
Try what they suggest, within reason. Evaluate and adapt. Remote learning is not recreating a traditional classroom. In fact, that type of setting may be the least appropriate for your child. If possible have a variety of learning spaces available that meet their needs depending on subject and time of day.
This is an opportunity to learn. Academically and behaviorally. An opportunity for even the youngest learner to figure out what works for them. In turn you will learn about your child. When the day comes that mortar and brick is once again the way school happens you will have valuable information for the teacher about your child’s unique learning style.
